Catholic University of America, South Campus
The Catholic University of America, located in the Northeast quadrant of the District of Columbia, recently donated land as part of a new $200 million multi-use development project within walking distance of the historic university. The project includes the construction of four new buildings, three of which require installation of excavation support systems. Steele Foundation began construction on the first of the three sheeting systems in late 2011. The support of excavation systems include soldier beam and lagging walls supported by tiebacks or internal steel bracing with concrete heel blocks. Soldier beams are being driven on two of the three excavations. Old demolished existing buildings along with fill soils created several challenges for the soldier beam installation. The support of excavation system for the third building will require pre-drilling to install soldier beams into stiff over-consolidated clays.
