The Project
This project involved lowering the current basement level for a two-story retail space in Georgetown, to accommodate a new tenant requiring increased headroom for their showroom. This adjustment necessitated structural shoring of existing concrete columns and underpinning of masonry walls to facilitate the demolition of existing foundations and excavation. EastBanc enlisted Steele Foundation to engineer and execute the required shoring and underpinning.

Challenges and Results
The shoring solution entailed a custom-made structural steel shoring frame bolted to the existing concrete columns and supported by concrete pads positioned within hand-dug and shored pits. The shoring frame allowed for the existing concrete columns, carrying substantial loads (up to 145,000 lbs.), to cantilever off the ends of the frame. Hand-dug underpinning provided support for the existing wall foundations.
