About Us

Who We Are

Steele Foundation, LLC is an award-winning design-build engineered foundation construction contractor serving the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

We are one of the few firms in the region that specializes in engineered foundation construction for general contractors, architects, engineers, developers and building owners who have complicated projects that require expertise in deep foundation challenges.

Ours is a particularly hazardous business because dealing with difficult ground conditions is one of the riskiest parts of any construction project. Our team of highly trained, licensed and experienced professionals design and implement excavation support and shoring systems for underground basements and parking facilities.

As the regional go-to expert for commercial foundation projects, we are big enough to resolve difficult and hazardous engineering and construction challenges — and small enough to provide agile, customized partnerships tailored to meet the needs of each client.

Engineered foundation construction: It’s what we do, and we do it best.

Our Mission & Vision

Our vision is that every building, every structure is recognized for its architectural beauty and function, with no concerns about its underlying safety or stability.

Steele Foundation engineers and craftsmen work closely with project designers, developers and owners to provide cost-effective and safe design-build solutions for sheeting, underpinning, shoring and foundation projects – delivering confidence in the safety, stability and longevity of every structure.

Our History

Steele Foundation, LLC has five decades of longevity in the design-construction business.

After earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and Professional Engineer (PE) registrations, Ronald (Ron) W. Steele first learned the business by working at concrete construction and foundation companies. In 1968, he partnered with Ned Moroney, formerly of Spencer, White & Prentis, to start their own firm, Steele and Moroney, Inc. Quickly becoming known as experts in shoring systems and excavation, they were contracted to survey the existing building foundation of the Pension Building (now the National Building Museum) in DC to assess its reaction to tunnel construction for the future Metro underground rail system.

Over the next two decades, the company grew its experience and reputation as a regional expert in designing and constructing commercial building underground foundations.

Shortly before the retirement of Ron’s partner in 1993, Ron’s son, J. Andrew (Andy) Steele, PE, D. GE joined the firm, bringing his own set of credentials. After graduating in 1986 from his father’s alma mater in the same field of study, Andy started his career in the structural engineering of commercial buildings and bridges. He developed his skills at two regional engineering firms and joined Steele Foundation with the right mix of talent and experience to complement the firm’s work in engineered foundation construction.

Over the years, Steele Foundation navigated many changes and challenges. Market fluctuations and federal government construction projects ebbed and flowed – and methods of contracting changed over the decades, as well. We have endured the peaks and valleys because of our broad base of professional experience; a drive to keep up with building trends and technology; a commitment to retaining the best and brightest employees and young engineers; and our long-standing and trusted relationships with our colleagues in the construction business.

Today, we’re proud that Steele Foundation is often the first contact our clients make to help them break down the conceptual challenges of new construction projects. Engineers, architects and builders trust our expertise and experience with deep foundation work – coupled with unrelenting professionalism, integrity and commitment to quality.
